Standard Portable Toilet

The unit most people picture when they hear "porta potty." It's the workhorse of the industry — simple, durable, and the most economical way to add restroom capacity to a job site or outdoor event.

What's Inside a Standard Unit

A standard portable toilet is a self-contained, non-flushing unit built around a molded plastic enclosure. Inside you'll typically find:

  • A toilet seat set over a sealed holding tank
  • A waist-high urinal (on most unisex units)
  • A hand sanitizer dispenser mounted near the door
  • A roof vent to help manage odor
  • A door latch with a simple occupancy indicator ("vacant/occupied")
  • Toilet paper holder and a small interior shelf

There's no running water and no flush mechanism — waste and chemical deodorizer sit in the sealed tank below until the unit is serviced. That simplicity is exactly what keeps it affordable and easy to place almost anywhere with a reasonably flat surface.

Best Uses

Standard units are the default choice for:

  • Construction and job sites
  • Casual outdoor events — block parties, fairs, sports tournaments
  • Backyard gatherings and family events
  • Agricultural and remote work sites
  • Disaster relief and temporary staging areas

If your event is more formal — a wedding, a corporate gathering, or anything where guest impression matters — most providers recommend stepping up to a deluxe flushable unit instead.

How Many Do You Need?

As a general planning rule, budget one standard unit per roughly 10 workers on a job site, or one unit per 50–75 guests at a casual event, adjusting upward for longer events, food service, or alcohol. Servicing

Standard units are sized for several days of moderate use before they need to be pumped and restocked. For multi-day events or busy job sites, your provider will typically schedule a servicing route to empty the tank, refill the sanitizer, and restock supplies — ask about servicing frequency when you book so it matches your actual usage.
